SSC CGL Exam Pattern 2016: The Staff Selection Commission initiated the application process for SSC Combined Graduate Level Examination last week. A lot of candidates have already submitted their application forms online. If you still haven’t applied, make sure you go through the eligibility criteria first. After applying, the next obvious step would be to get familiar with SSC CGL Exam Pattern for Tier 1 and Tier 2 Papers. This article will basically explain the new exam pattern, marking scheme and marks distribution in SSC Combined Graduate Level Examination for Tier 1 and Tier 2 Papers.
SSC CGL Exam Pattern 2016
- SSC CGL 2016 Tier 1: Written Prelims Examination (Objective MCQ Pattern)
- SSC CGL 2016 Tier 2: Written Main Examination (Objective MCQ Pattern)
- SSC CGL 2016 Tier 3: Computer Proficiency Test/ Skill Test/ Document Verification
There has been a few changes in SSC CGL Exam Pattern, the most significant one being that there will be no interviews this year. Please keep in mind that you need to score well in both Tier 1 and Tier 2 Examinations in order to get selected as a portion of each paper will be taken into consideration while calculating the final score. Tier 3 in SSC CGL 2016 will totally depend on the posts you apply for.
SSC CGL Exam Pattern Tier 1
SSC Combined Graduate Level Examination for Tier 1 will be an objective MCQ based paper. Tier 1 Exam will be divided equally in 4 sections.

Tier 1 Examination will be attempted by candidates of each and every post. A few important points regarding SSC CGL Tier I Exam are as follows.
- The Exam will be bilingual in English and Hindi, except for English Comprehension.
- Total Time Allotted is 2 Hours (120 Minutes).
- The Time Duration for the Visually Impaired candidates is 160 minutes.
- The total number of questions and marks will be same, i.e. 200.
- Marking Scheme: Each Question carry 1 mark. 0.25 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer.
This will basically be a preliminary analysis of your aptitude and language skills. But you need to score well in order to move to SSC CGL Tier II Examination.
SSC CGL Exam Pattern Tier 2
The level of competition intensifies. The Exam Pattern and Number of Papers for SSC CGL Tier II will depend on the category of posts you opt for. It will be conducted over the course of 2 days.

Paper I: Arithmetical Ability
Paper I of SSC CGL Tier II Exam is mandatory for all posts.
- Total Number of Questions will be 100.
- Total Marks allotted is 200.
- Time allotted for solving will be 2 hours (120 minutes)
- Each Question carries 2 marks.
- Marking Scheme: 2 marks will be awarded for correct answer and 0.50 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer.
Paper II: English Language & Comprehension
Paper II of SSC CGL Tier II Exam is mandatory for all posts.
- Total Number of Questions will be 200.
- Total Marks allotted is 200.
- Time allotted for solving will be 2 hours (120 minutes)
- Each Question carries 1 mark.
- Marking Scheme: 1 mark will be awarded for correct answer and 0.25 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer.
Paper III: Commerce/ Mathematics Statistics/ Economics
Paper II of SSC CGL Tier II Exam is meant for candidates who apply for the post of Statistical Investigator Grade II and Compiler.
- Total Number of Questions will be 100.
- Total Marks allotted is 200.
- Time allotted for solving will be 2 hours (120 minutes)
- Each Question carries 2 marks.
- Marking Scheme: 2 marks will be awarded for correct answer and 0.50 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer.
Paper IV: General Studies
Paper II of SSC CGL Tier II Exam is meant for candidates who apply for the post of Assistant Audit Officer.
- Total Number of Questions have not been specified yet.
- Total Marks allotted is 200.
- Time allotted for solving will be 2 hours (120 minutes)
Hence, the final sum up of SSC CGL Tier II Exam Pattern is as follows.
- Paper I & II paper are mandatory for all the posts.
- Paper-III is only for those candidates who apply for the post of Statistical Investigator Gr.II & Compiler.
- Paper IV is only for those candidates who apply for the post of Assistant Audit
Officer.
A cumulative score achieved in both Tier I and Tier II Papers will be taken into account for shortlisting candidates for Final Stage, which is, Tier III.
SSC CGL Exam Pattern Tier 3
As we have stated earlier, there will no interviews this year. There are a number of Group B and C category posts where only document verification is done as a part of SSC CGL Tier III. But, where it is applicable, SSC CGL Tier 3 conducts Skill Test or Computer Proficiency Test.
Tier III consist of 100 marks where the applicable candidates attempt skill test or computer proficiency test, depending on the post.
- Skill Test is conducted for the post of Tax Assistant in Central Excise & Income Tax.
- Computer Proficiency Test is conducted for the post of Assistant and Sub-Assistant.
Depending on the performance, a final merit list will be prepared. Hence, candidates need to perform well at each and every level in order to crack SSC CGL Examination.
