SSC CGL Revised Scheme of Examination 2016
Now, moving to the main task at hand, which is, understanding the selection criteria for SSC CGL 2016 Examination. There is a 3/4 Tier Selection Process for SSC CGL 2016.
- SSC CGL 2016 Tier 1: Written Examination (CBT Objective Pattern)

- SSC CGL 2016 Tier 3: Descriptive Test (Essay Writing)
- SSC CGL 2016 Tier 4: Computer Proficiency Test /Skill Test/ Document Verification
The New Exam Pattern has made SSC CGL Tier 1 and Tier 2 online and also introduced Tier 3 as a mandatory section for all posts. Let us now understand the selection procedure at each level.
SSC CGL Tier I: Objective Written Examination (Online)
This is the first level of written examination for SSC CGL 2016. The SSC CGL Tier 1 Exam is held for all categories. A candidate needs to qualify in Tier 1 Examination in order to move to the next level. But there are significant changes in SSC CGL Tier 1 Exam Pattern which every candidate must know.
- SSC CGL Tier-I will be conducted online.
- The Exam is bilingual i.e. English and Hindi.
- There are 100 questions in total, divided in 4 sections equally.
- The 4 sections are Reasoning, General Awareness, Numerical Aptitude and English Comprehension. 25 Questions in each section will be asked.
- The total time is 75 minutes and the total marks are 200.

The candidates who are able to qualify SSC CGL Tier-I Examination will move to the next level, which is, Tier-2 Exam.
SSC CGL Tier II: Objective Written Examination (Online)
Tier-II of the Combined Graduate Level Examination will carry the same exam pattern i.e. Objective MCQ type. It will be conducted over the course of 2 days, depending on the category of posts you apply for. Now, as per your post preference application for SSC CGL 2016, you might appear for 2 or 3 papers.
For the post of Statistical Investigators (Grade II) and Compilers, there will be 3 papers in SSC CGL Tier II Examination. The papers are as follows.
- Arithmetical Ability
- English Language & Comprehension
- Commerce/ Mathematics Statistics/ Economics
For the post of Assistant Audit Officer, there will be 3 papers in SSC CGL Tier II Examination. The papers are as follows.

- General Studies
The Total Marks for all Papers are 200 marks each and every paper will have 100 questions, except for English, which will have 200 questions. Time allotted to each paper is 2 hours.
For the post of Assistant, Inspector of Income-Tax/ Inspector (Central Excise), Inspector (PO), Inspector (Examiner), Sub-Inspector in CBI, Inspector of Posts, Assistant Enforcement Officer, Divisional Accountants, Accountants, Auditors, Tax Assistants, UDCs, there will be 2 papers in SSC CGL Tier II Examination. The papers are as follows.
- Arithmetical Ability
- English Language & Comprehension
The Total Marks for all Papers are 200 marks each and every paper will have 100 questions from the subject mentioned above. Time allotted to each paper is 2 hours.
SSC CGL Tier III: Descriptive Paper in English/ Hindi (Essay/ Precis)
This newly introduced section by Staff Selection Commission will form the Tier 3 for SSC CGL 2016. This section will be conducted in Pen and Paper format and will consist of Essay/ Precis/ Letter/ Application Writing.
The total marks for this section is 100 and the time allotted in 1 Hour.
SSC CGL Tier IV: DEST/ CPT (wherever applicable)
The Final Layer of selection is SSC CGL Tier IV. Similar to Tier II, the candidate’s position relies highly on the post preference. Depending on that, the candidate can be called for
- Data Entry Skill Test (DEST)
- Computer Proficiency Test (CPT)
