Railways Goods Guard Job Description 

First things first, you need to crack RRB NTPC 2016 Recruitment Exam. There is both Prelims and Mains Examination. Only after you qualify in both of the written exams, will you be considered for the post of Goods Guard.

The Job Profile of a Goods Guard is somewhat strenuous in nature that he has stay in his brake van during the entire run where no basic facilities are given. A Goods Guard is in-charge of a running train.

There are multiple duties assigned to a Goods Guard in the Indian Railways.

  • Get the vehicle guidance (VG – written document containing numbers of wagons, their tare weight, load tonnage of individual wagons, total tonnage)from Station Master/Yard Master.
  • Check the entire formation for anything that can endanger safe running of trains.
  • Check that doors of wagons are closed.
  • Check the brake continuity with Loco Pilot.
  • Sign the Brake Power certificate(BPC) after ensuring sufficient brake power
  • Constantly monitor the formation on the run for any abnormalities.
  • Prepare train reports like Combined Train Reports, Late Arrival Reports…
  • Attend along with LP/ALP minor troubles experienced on the run like brake binding etc.

But don’t get worried by this long list of tasks. There is a mandatory 45 days training for Gooods Guards in respective Zonal training institutes. During this training period, the selected candidates are taught how to execute their respective tasks properly and in time. Training modules consists of General Rules, Goods and Coaching Theory and Railway Commercial rules.

 

Railways Goods Guard Salary and Perks

According to RRB NTPC 2016 Notification, there are 7591 vacancies for the post of Goods Guard. It is considered as a good, respectable job profile in the Indian Railways. The salary or pay scale breakdown is as follows.

 Pay Scale  Rs. 5,200 – 20,200/-
 Grade Pay  Rs. 2,800/-
 Initial Pay  Rs. 8,560/-
 Total Pay  Rs. 11,360/-

Apart from fixed pay scale, there are a few added benefits and perks offered with the post of Goods Guard.

  • Dearness Allowance (DA)
  • Transport Allowance (TA)
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA)
  • Running Allowance

After a 45 day training period, the trainee gets appointed as a Goods Guard at a particular station. The career progression of a Goods Guard can be as follows.

  1. Goods Guard
  2. Passenger Guard
  3. Express Guard
  4. Section Controller
  5. Chief Controller

When you are promoted to the level of a non-running post like Section Controller, the pay is fixed taking into consideration pay element of Running Allowance, which is highly beneficial for the employee. A Goods Guard can also write LDCE exams for Group B Gazetted post of Assistant Opertions Manager (AOM).

  1. hi iam working for isro as a assistant with 2400 grade pay salary. now i got job in railways as goods guard which is 2800 grade pay salary. which is best for me. can i join iin railway or stay in isro. please reply.
