  • Wear professional clothing. Remember, the interviewer will be assessing your ability to be a role model for students. A person who is well dressed and nicely groomed is always impressive to meet.

1. Male candidates must wear a simple formal trouser, full sleeve shirt (preferably white), simple tie, mid-calf length socks, matching shoes and belt. Stay away from jeans for the interview.

2. For females on the other hand must wear a suit or saree, with minimal makeup, trim nails and avoid flashy nail colours, and an understated purse will do. Clothes should always be clean and well ironed.

  • Research the school. Visit the school’s website to get information about the school’s philosophy, mission, academic programs, extracurricular activities, and more. The more you know about the school and the school district, the more likely you’ll be able to ask targeted questions to get an idea of what it’s like to work there.
  • Prepare questions to ask. Come with a list of questions to ask the administrator and others interviewing you.
  • Prepare documents to bring. Bring your teacher portfolio as well as an updated cover letter, resume and references.

AWES Interview: During the Interview

  • Express your interest. Make it clear that you want the job. Make sure your strengths are relevant to the role and weakness are not not contrary to what is required for the role. Analyse the role. Think about what the interviewer wants to hear when answering this one. Keep in mind that each answer you give should add value to the position or company.
  • Ask about their hiring plans. It’s perfectly okay to ask about their time frame and when you should expect to hear back.

Follow up- Write a thank you note after the interview. Do this for the administrator and everyone else who interviewed you as soon as possible after your meeting. Q.1 Tell me a little bit about yourself.

Q.2 Let’s pretend it’s almost the first day of school and you are a first grade teacher. How would you prepare your classroom?

Come up with some creative decorating ideas, making sure
they are student-centered.  You could also mention a huge welcome sign, the daily schedule, age-appropriate posters, name tags for students, labeled desks (how will they be 
arranged). Or, mention that you might invite parents and students to visit the classroom the day before school
starts, with the administrator’s permission. If you have a portfolio with have pictures of other first days of school, this is a great chance to share them with the panel.

Q.3 As a grade one teacher, how would you motivate parents to become involved in the classroom and in their child’s education?



Parental involvement means much more than just attending parent-teacher interviews. You must set goals to keep the parents abreast of what is going on in the classroom. You 
can communicate that information and ask for volunteers through weekly or bi-weekly newsletters. You might inform parents when you are starting a new unit or specific 
projects and make sure they clearly understand the homework assignments each week. You should contact or speak to parents not just when a child is having difficulty, but also when they are doing well.

Q.4 Are you a flexible teacher? If so, explain how.



Yes I am a flexible teacher. I can deal very effectively with people and students from all backgrounds and socio-economic groups. In teaching, I am completely aware that students have different learning rates and styles. Some are fast learners and some are slow learners. I will adjust according to the needs of the children.

Q.5 What ways do you assess and evaluate students?

I make use of different methods. I use formal and informal assessment procedures to promote social, academic, and physical development. The usual
assessment that I use is written quizzes and examinations. Throughout the semester, I also grade and assess students on their class participation 
such as recitations, reports, group activities, and seat work.

Q.5 What will you do to modify your teaching to meet the needs of a gifted student?



What I will do is to modify his
 work assignments in expectation or length to fit his abilities. His tasks will require a higher level of understanding compared to the regular students. During class discussions, I can direct questions to him or her that require higher-level thinking skills. I also would
 encourage the gifted student to take a leadership role in group work so that his classmates can emulate and be inspired by him.

Q.6 How do you differentiate your teaching? Please provide a couple of examples.

My teaching is unique in the sense that while teaching approach is holistic, it is also inclusive and individualized. It is holistic because I not only share knowledge with my students, but I also elicit knowledge from them. For example, when I had a group of gifted children in my class, I
 will give them special assignments to stimulate their higher level thinking skills and will present them their work to the class.

Note: Both overconfidence and too much nervousness are bad for an interview. This is because interview are designed to put you through small pressure tests and to gauge your reactions when you are in difficult situations. Try not to panic.
